We have been asked to identify a Senior Electrical Product Design Engineer for one of our clients.

This position is located in Asheville, North Carolina.

Position Description:
The Design Engineer is responsible for performing a wide variety of engineering and technical tasks involving the application of engineering knowledge and the development of solutions to complex problems pertaining to products, materials, manufacturing processes, tests, and unique customer applications.

Selects engineering techniques to solve problems and make design recommendations.

Participates as a team member or serves as the leader of cross-functional project design teams.

Directs preparation of appropriate documentation for assigned projects.  

Ensures successful completion of assigned projects within the budgeted time and cost constraints.  

Participates in defining engineering approaches including the planning and scheduling of work.

Executes all design, development, and related technical tasks required to maintain the product line.

Develops product designs which may require the implementation of unique solutions.

Initiates and prepares specifications for products, equipment, and processes while maintaining awareness and control of costs.

Develops and maintains detailed project schedules incorporating resource management and milestone deliverables.

Performs digital, analog, and power electronics circuit design and analysis utilizing tools such as PSPICE, MathCAD, Matlab. Designs to meet safety, EMC, and agency approval standards. Contributes to organizational technical and business strategy.

Must be capable of writing articles for trade and technical publications, presenting papers and preparing patent disclosures.

Performs or leads team in design process tracking and execution - specifications, risk assessment, design quality assessment, design for manufacturing, design information control, design verification, and documentation - all in accordance with ISO and company procedures and systems.

 
Required Skills:

Demonstrated familiarity with various electric machines, drives, and control, including permanent magnet machines, synchronous machines, and induction machines.
•        Demonstrated knowledge of thermal consideration in power electronics design.
•        Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CAD software programs such as AutoCAD is required.
•        Solid problem solving skills using analytical and logical thinking skills and ability to analyze product application issues and drive them to root cause resolution is required.
•        Ability to visualize and communicate conceptual models is required.
•        Knowledge of applicable UL / CSA / IEC product and EMC standards is required.
•        Demonstrated project management skills required in order to lead small to mid-size development projects.
•        Demonstrated ability to meet aggressive reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets.
•        Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently toward timely completion of a desired goal is required.
•        Demonstrated ability to effectively interface with internal and external customers is required.
•        Must be a strong team player that enjoys a fast paced environment.
•        Willing to travel occasionally to support manufacturing, product design, and product application issues is required.

Basic Qualifications (Including Educational Requirements) Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering required from an accredited institution.

Minimum 5 years work experience in electrical product design

Must be legally authorized to work in the US/PR without company sponsorship.
Our preference would be a candidate that also has:
•        MSEE preferred.
•        Power Electronics product design experience utilizing high power and high voltage   semiconductor devices such as IGBTs, IGCTs, thyristors, MOSFETs, and associated gate drivers, current transducers, high frequency magnetics, and PWM closed-loop control.
•        Knowledge of electrical power systems, particularly low or medium voltage motor control.
•        Embedded microprocessor and DSP hardware/firmware system design and programming experience.
•        Experience with electrical circuit simulation tools such as PSPICE and system level simulation tools such as Matlab.
•        Demonstrated history of innovation such as design patents, patent disclosures, trade secrets.
•        Experience with Design for Reliability, Design for Six Sigma, and Design for Manufacturability best practices.
